East Coast Garden Center, Cordrey Center post spring travel update

Trip to Italian market planned March 20

A trip to Philadelphia’s famous 9th Street Italian Market comes Wednesday, March 20. Bring a shopping list and a cooler, and shop with the experts for menu specialties from their favorite vendors. Bus departs East Coast Garden Center at 7:30 a.m. and Lowe's Lewes at 8 a.m.; $48 pp.

On Saturday, April 20, ECGC heads to Longwood Gardens for Behind the Garden Gates and the Tulip Walk for a look at an eye-popping display of spring color. Participants will see expert gardeners and craftsmen plan, prepare and design. They will enjoy free classes, demos and discussions and free time to tour the Flower Garden Walk with more than 100,000 blooms. Independent lunch. Bus departs East Coast Garden Center at 7:30 a.m. and Lowe's Lewes at 7:45 a.m. Return trip departs Longwood at 3:30 p.m.; $49 pp.

Spring at Winterthur will be Wednesday, May 8.  Participants will explore the gardens with John Feliciani, a fourth-generation Winterthur insider who will share behind-the-scenes info and stories.  They will also view the gorgeous azaleas and spring wildflowers and learn how H.F. DuPont used plants to capture, paint and transform the gardens into an exquisite landscape. Independent lunch. Museum tour. Bus departs East Coast Garden Center at 7:30 a.m. and Lowe's Lewes at 7:45 a.m. Return departs Winterthur at 3:30 p.m.; $52 pp.

On Wednesday, May 15, ECGC travels to Grounds for Sculpture and Princeton, N.J., a 42-acre sculpture garden and arboretum on the former site of the New Jersey State Fairgrounds. Visitors can view the museum and galleries also, and enjoy lunch at the Zagat-rated Rat’s Restaurant on the property. Also scheduled is a tour of Princeton by motor coach, covering James Madison, T.S. Eliot, F. Scott Fitzgerald and more, including Revolutionary War sites. Wear comfy shoes; there is a lot of walking at Grounds for Sculpture. Bus departs East Coast Garden Center at 5:30 a.m. Return to ECGC at approximately 8 p.m.; $171 pp.

Tudor Place House and Gardens is the destination Thursday, May 23.  Built for George Washington’s granddaughter, the property features centuries-old trees, heirloom plants and flowers, and fragrant English boxwood. Guided house tour includes a look at the largest collection of George Washington artifacts. Denise Clemons escorts this trip and will share her inside experience and stories. Independent lunch. Bus departs Lowe's Lewes at 7:45 a.m. and East Coast Garden Center at 8 a.m. Return departs Georgetown 3:30 p.m.; $TBD.
