Signs of spring: Lewes Little League sign-up March 7 at Beacon

Flagrant Fowl - Andrew Grau went after a Sallies guy on a breakaway layup and tried to block his shot from behind. He was called for a Flagrant Fowl, which in Sussex County just means angry chicken. I know it's "foul" but I need my joke to work. A flagrant foul doesn’t have to be intentional but must involve excessive or violent contact that could injure the fouled player or several adults standing behind the basket. Heck, Andrew shoots flagrant layups - it's best not to get in his way - but Kountry would never intentionally injure or hurt another player. It's just not in him.

Lewes Little League - Paste this on your refrigerator in the kitchen or garage or both. The final tryout for LLL is 6 p.m., Thursday, March 7, at Beacon Middle School. Tryout schedule is as follows: girls 8 to 12 from 6 to 6:45 p.m., boys 8 & 9 from 6:45 to 8 p.m and boys 10 through 12 from 8 to 9 p.m. There is also online registration at www.lewesll.org or contact Skip Faust at 302-745-8764 or go into Lloyd's in Lewes and yell “Yo, Skippy!” and someone will ring him up. Just never yell “Second checker!” - no telling who will emerge from the back room.

Snippets - Darin Slade, a runner of local races along with Linda and Brandt Chi, ran the Little Rock Marathon March 3. Brandt ran a 3:07.34, good for fourth in his 45-49 age group of 165; Darin ran 3:24, 10th in the 45-49 age group; and Linda came in at 3:59.09, 12th in the 45-49 age group. Brandt and Linda are part of the C.F. Schwartz car dealership family in Dover, so this is a good week to buy a Toyota while their immune systems are compromised and resistance is weak.

Andrew Scrutchfield, former Cape three-sport athlete, now a sophomore at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J., scored four goals as the sixth-ranked Ducks beat Springfield College 16-8 on March 2. Andrew has nine goals and three assists over four games.

Diamond Deshields, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard out of Norcross High School in Georgia, was recently named 2013 WBCA National High School Player of the Year. Diamond, who averaged 26 points per game, is the daughter of Seaford athletic legend Delino Deshields. She has signed to play at North Carolina. All you Cape guys from the '80s can start working on stories of how Delino dunked on you in high school. Seaford coaches tell the story of holding two quarters together in front of Delino’s face then moving them apart and away from each other. They swear Delino’s eyeballs worked independently, each one following its own quarter. About 10 years ago, a community group wanted to erect a sign going into town, “Welcome to Seaford, Home of Bop.” A great idea that never got off the ground, unlike Bop.

I was shown the new Salesianum fitness complex last Saturday by coach Jim Brazill and illustrious alumnus Dr. Ed Hines. Historical photos rimmed the walls.  I took a picture of a picture showing my friend George Glenn being carried off the field after winning the state championship in football in 1987, a mere 26 years ago.

I am a fan of Little League, and I hope they survive competition from select soccer and Atlantic Lacrosse, not to mention travel baseball and softball. We all know what happened last summer when a state championship Cape softball team disbanded before regionals to go back to their travel teams. Cape softball of all teams in the conference faces the biggest talent drain because of lacrosse and track, and now soccer has hired a national-caliber girls' coach; there is only so much talent to go around.
