March 18, 2013

The Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition announces that its 16th Annual Breast Cancer Update will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 10, at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in Dover. The Breast Cancer Update features leading medical experts and speakers discussing the most up-to-date information on breast cancer prevention, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship.

The annual one-day educational forum is free and open to the public and has become one of Delaware's most trusted sources of up-to-date breast cancer information.

This year’s Breast Cancer Update, Continuing the Breast Cancer Journey, focuses on the recent trends and advances in breast cancer treatment, options for breast reconstruction, self-image and sexuality, and the impact of a breast cancer diagnosis on couples.

Speakers for this year’s conference include E. Shelley Hwang, MD, professor of surgery at Duke University Medical Center; Diana Dickson-Witmer, MD, FACS, medical director of the Breast Center at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, Christiana Care Health System; Jillian Banbury, MD, surgeon at Danyo Banbury Plastic Surgery; Christopher Koprowski, MD, MBA, radiation oncologist, Christiana Care Health System; Christine Cannon, PhD, Arsht-Cannon Fund; Helen L. Coons, PhD, ABPP, clinical health psychologist, Women’s Mental Health Associates; and breast cancer survivors.

“It is our goal to have programming that empowers our community in the fight against breast cancer,” said Vicky Cooke, DBCC executive director. “The Annual Breast Cancer Update allows us to bring nationally renowned speakers in the breast cancer field and gives us the opportunity to educate the community about the innovative research, treatment and programs that are available in Delaware.”

The event features discussions by panels of breast cancer experts and attracts more than 300 community members each year including physicians, nurses, social workers, breast cancer survivors and advocates. Contact hours will be available to nursing professionals and social workers for $30.

Sponsors for the event include Astra Zeneca, Bayhealth Medical Center, Christiana Care Health System Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, Delaware State News, Genentech, Highmark BlueCross BlueShield of Delaware, Mid-Delaware Imaging, and the Delaware Department of Health and Social Services - Division of Public Health.
