Cape to host Delmar/Mid Atlantic Play Day March 16

The best of high school girls' lacrosse come to town

Go figure and reconfigure - that is the mission of lacrosse preseason play days. March 13 in the afternoon on the home pitch to be named later - turf field two - the Cape lacrosse girls hosted Bennett and Stephen Decatur in a rescheduled scrimmage that originally included Parkside.

“We are getting closer to figuring out lineups but are still evaluating players," coach P.J. Kesmodel said after battling Bennett and Stephen Decatur. “Decatur was a good test for us; they have lots of good players and athletes. Both of us were looking at different kids over two halves.  You want to win with the athletes on the field, but that’s not what play days are about.”

Football coaches love to say that about preseason as well, but everyone sort of knows the score, meaningful or not.

Cape jumped Decatur early at 5-0, but by halftime the Seahawks were back 5-2. Midway through the second half it was 6-6, but Lizzie Frederick and Anna Frederick scored the final two goals of the scrimmage while Decatur’s starting goalie Skylar Siegfried was on the bench. Siegfried is on her way to Jacksonville University next year.

"We pretty much know what we have on attack, and our two midfields look set,” Kesmodel said. “We are still looking at the defense where we are the most inexperienced, but also maybe the most athletic we’ve ever been.“

The Delmar/Mid-Atlantic Lacrosse Play Day at Cape on Saturday, March 16, involves eight teams, each playing three games. Games are on the hour from 9 a.m to 2 p.m.  Delmar High School is not among them; the Delmar in this instance is a shortened version of Delmarva.

Teams in attendance include Moorestown, N.J., Queen Anne’s, Md., Severna Park, Md., Georgetown Visitation, Washington, D.C.; Maryvale of Baltimore, Md.; Mt. Hebron, Md.; Downingtown East, Pa.; and Cape.

Cape plays Mt. Hebron at 9 a.m, Downington East 1 p.m. and Georgetown Visitation 2 p.m.

The Vikings open the regular season at home Saturday, March 23, hosting powerful Holy Cross of D.C.
