Family sad to be leaving Lewes

March 21, 2013

For the past 15 months we have been lucky enough to live in Lewes full time. Our experience has far exceeded any expectations we had for “living at the beach.”

The Cape Gazette helped our transition from Colorado to Lewes in providing an excellent resource for local news and events.  Thank you for being here and doing such a great job reporting on the heartbeat of this amazing community.

The Cape Gazette does a nice job of covering school news. We love to see pictures of the teachers, staff and kids at Richard Shields Elementary. Shields is fortunate to be led by the fabulous and photogenic Principal Jenny Nauman, who (as I read recently in the Cape Gazette) "knows every kid's name," and there are over 700 of them.

All of the teachers in the second, third, fourth and fifth grade at Shields have been outstanding, especially Mrs. Peet (fourth grade) and Mrs. Townsend (fifth grade) who, in addition to being great teachers go above and beyond to instill positive self-esteem and enthusiasm for learning.

We have “The World’s Greatest Neighbors” in Lewes. I will never forget receiving a giant load of mulch from Grizzly’s Landscape last spring and shortly after two separate neighbors were up in our driveway with shovels in hand to help (thanks again Arthur and Jim). Our neighbors have welcomed us with cookies, gardening advice and plants from their yards. (Betty, Rose and Lacey thanks again for making our garden beds beautiful.)

Our Lewes neighbors have invited us to parties, dinners out and in, to hikes at the state park, to political meet and greets and graciously put up with the only kids on our block. They are quick to lend a needed item and always there to pull the trash cans in and water plants when we are away.  We will be life-long friends and are so grateful to know you.

Sadly we will be leaving Lewes this week as we open up the Law Office of J. Mitchell Tacy in Albany, N.Y. Connor and James will be the third generation of Tacy’s to attend the Albany Academy, (celebrating their 200th anniversary this year). Connor and Jimmie have made great friends at Shields and at the beach, all of whom they look forward to seeing at the jetty this summer.

In addition to Lewes friends, we will also miss going to Surf Bagel, local nights at the Buttery, Tom at Cape Wine and Spirits, Flowers by Mayumi, Biblion Books, chatting with everyone at the Daily Market (great coffee and newspapers), Grotto Pizza (go to trivia Tuesdays; its really fun), walks to the Canalfront Park, walks to the bay, the farmers market, hikes in the park and on the beach, Dairy Queen and Two Dips for ice cream, the Cape Gazette and seeing the beautiful flower boxes by Lewes in Bloom.

We will especially miss the wonderful community of yogis at Soul Yoga (located in the Plantations). Jennifer Scmermund’s warm and light class will make any body at any age fall in love with yoga.

Most of all, thanks to Jim Ryan of Lewes and Washington, D.C. for suggesting we move to his beach house for a year so that his nephews could learn to surf. Lewes will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

We'll miss you all!
