So many gun legislation questions

March 29, 2013

Sen. Diane Feinstein: I do not understand your adamant position that high capacity magazines and semi-automatic assault rifles need to be banned to protect the public. Personally, I don't see why anyone would need a semi-automatic assault rifle as a measure of protection, but that's a personal choice and I think it's unconstitutional to deny someone that pursuit or ownership.

I am a law abiding citizen; why do you think that a semi-automatic rifle would make me otherwise? Considering that the handgun is the weapon of choice for criminals, why do you insist on going after assault rifles? Is it just the name of the item that offends you? If it were called a high-powered autoload hunting rifle would it be less offensive to you? Have you ever fired a weapon? Can you tell me how many rounds were fired from a high capacity magazine in a semi-automatic assault rifle at Newtown?

Can you tell me how many rounds were fired from a high capacity magazine in a semi-automatic assault rifle by Timothy McVeigh in Oklahoma City? Can you tell me how many rounds were fired from a high capacity magazine in a semi-automatic assault rifle on 9-11? Can you tell me what percentage of gun violence deaths are caused by rounds fired from a high-capacity magazine in a semi-automatic assault rifle compared to, say, all gun related deaths?

Can you tell me what percentage of gun violence deaths are caused by rounds fired from a high capacity magazine in a semi-automatic assault rifle compared to, say, box cutters, hammers, screw drivers or other household items? Can you tell me what percentage of gun violence deaths are caused by rounds fired from a high capacity magazine in a semi-automatic assault rifle compared to, say, drunk drivers?

Stop and think about the constitutionality of what you are demanding. I wonder if it is just not the first step of a liberal government afraid of its people and endeavoring to disarm them completely. If that indeed is the case, I fear you will lose this battle in a bigger way than you can even imagine. One thing that I do laud you on is that your tenacity has created a massive demand for guns (of all kinds) and ammunition. You have managed to arm more citizens in the last six months than anyone would have ever dreamed possible - great for the economy though. Thanks!
