Cape baseball falls to Caravel in season opener

Cape baseball opened its season March 23 by hosting baseball power Caravel Academy on a blustery afternoon. Cape had several opportunities to score throughout the game, but couldn't put it all together, as the Vikings fell short 7-3.

Cape has high expectations with seven seniors and the experience of head coach Ben Evick, and did some good things against Caravel, but the team wasn't quite ready for its first test.

Caravel was very aggressive on the bases and forced Cape into a few errors that produced the deciding runs. On the other side of the innings, the Vikings stranded 10 base runners and repeatedly found themselves a play away from scoring.

Griffin Kammerer had a great game for Cape, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple, a walk and an RBI. Kammerer also helped turn a double play that got Cape out of a middle-inning jam. Senior Cody Dmiterchik added a double for the Vikings, while Brooks Emery, Kai Vitella and Adam Marcinizyn scored Cape's three runs.

Starting pitcher Diaz Nardo battled through the cold and the Caravel lineup for five innings, and Tucker Nickerson closed out the game.

Evick said he was pleased by the team's overall performance and encouraged the team to put this loss behind them and get ready for Henlopen Conference play, which started Monday, March 25 at Smyrna.
