Beacon track girls unbeaten heading into spring break

Shamrock Shuffle 5 and 15K attracts 200 runners
March 30, 2013

Two double dual meets over four days on the Cape track, each involving 250 or more middle school athletes, crowded into Legends Stadium as Mariner and Beacon served as host schools for Millsboro and Georgetown March 22, then again March 26 when Chipman and Selbyville came to Lewes.

Not only were young athletes everywhere you looked, but the stands and the fence were full with front-row spectators.

The high school program at Cape has a deep track tradition, but it was nice to see so much support for the middle school programs.

Results from last Friday had Millsboro winning the boys' quad meet with 63 1/2 points, followed by Beacon (56 1/2), Georgetown (41) and Mariner (36). Beacon won the girls' meet, scoring 99 points over Millsboro (51 1/2), Mariner (31 1/2) and Georgetown (16).

On March 26, Chipman scored 74 points to win the boy’s quad meet, followed by Selbyville (52), Beacon (49) and Mariner (25).

Beacon again won the girls' meet, dominating with 105 1/2 points, followed by Chipman (68 1/2), Mariner (18) and Selbyville (8).

Individual highlights focus on five Beacon athletes and a relay team that has not been beaten in its events. A pair of distance runners, seventh-grader Logan Shuttleworth and eighth-grader Ben Bamforth, led their teams as Shuttleworth remained undefeated in the 1,600 meters, triple jump and 800 m over both meets, seeing a personal record of 2:42 in the 800.

Bamforth, a top 10 finisher at December’s cross country nationals, won three events (1,600m, 800m and triple jump) at both meets and recorded a 5:19 mile.

Dajante Mackey stays undefeated in the hurdles with a 9.5 season best going after the school record of 9.4, while Jordyn Miller won both long jump competitions, jumping 14-feet-8-inches.

First-year track athlete Zoe Scott, who doubles as a soccer player, won the high jump in both meets with a respectable 4-4.

The Beacon 800-meter relay team of leadoff Annie Judge, Katie Frederick, Katie Klabe and sixth-grade anchor Alia Marshall has run away from the field in both meets and is undefeated.

Mariner Middle School had four winners in the first quad meet versus Georgetown and Millsboro, as Lakendra Harpe won the 200 m in 29.9, while Cory Corbin won the 100 m. Branden Mills captured the 200 m in 26.0 seconds, while Raqwan Mosley won the discus event.

Beacon and Mariner will return from break with a meet Tuesday, April 9. The Jim Blades Invitational will be held Friday, April 12, at Lake Forest High School.

SPLITS…Cape High School track & field teams both won over Sussex Central, Indian River and St. Thomas More in the past week of Henlopen Conference action. Indian River won the 100 m, 200 m and 400 m relay to show they have sprinters, but the field is where Cape has always made a living and dominated the points in the events that were held. The long jump and triple jump were not contested due to wet conditions.

Jack Vassalotti runs about 90 percent of my Seashore Striders events and dresses for the theme in most events, but on March 26, Jack laced up his walking shoes for a hike across Delaware to benefit the youth of the YMCA of Rehoboth. Jack is one of the nicest guys you will meet, and his dedication to the youth of this community is incredible.

Two hundred runners showed up for the Shamrock Shuffle 15K and 5K March 23. The 15K was won by local pink panther Mary Beth Evans in a time of 1:10:41, averaging 7:35 a clip.  Brock Waughen of Pennsylvania won the male race in 54:4.

The Bunny Palooza 5K and 10K will be held Saturday, April 30, in Bethany Beach. Runners are reminded to pick up their packets on Friday afternoon in Bethany Beach. The race is now closed except for bandit bunnies.

I’m out! Happy Easter!
