Film society to offer 'The Gatekeepers' April 25 and 26

April 13, 2013

For April’s Monthly Screening, the Rehoboth Beach Film Society will present “The Gatekeepers” at 7 p.m., Thursday, April 25, at DiFebo’s at Bear Trap Dunes, and at 7 p.m., Friday, April 26, in the upstairs screening room at the Movies at Midway in Rehoboth Beach.

"The Gatekeepers," an Oscar nominee for Best Documentary, reveals the behind-the-scenes role of the Shin Bet, Israel’s domestic secret service agency, during the past 40 years. For the first time ever, six former heads of the Shin Bet share their insights and reflect publicly on their actions and decisions from the Six-Day War to the present. In a series of in-depth interviews, they talk openly about the major events that marked their tenures. The interviews are accompanied by archival footage and computer animations based on photographs taken at these events.

The citizens they swore to protect may have been safer as a result of their actions, but was the country any closer to peace? The audience is left pondering whether they or their governments would have responded any differently. New York Times critic A. O. Scott called the film the best documentary of 2012, deeming it “essential, eye-opening viewing.”

Admission for Monthly Screenings is $4 for Rehoboth Beach Film Society members (current membership card must be presented), and $6 for future members. Tickets will be sold at the door on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees of the Ocean View screenings can also receive 10 percent off DiFebo’s regular dinner entrees on the evening of the screening. The restaurant begins serving dinner at 4:30 p.m.; reservations and early arrivals for dinner are encouraged.
