Alice K. Ellis, proud Army veteran
Alice K. Ellis of Millsboro passed away peacefully Friday, April 5, 2013, at the Delaware Veterans Home, Milford with her loving family by her side. Mrs. Ellis was born May 16, 1921, in St. John, Thibodaux, La., daughter of the late Andrew and Adeline Schexnayder Keller.
Mrs. Ellis grew up in Louisiana before moving to Millsboro in 1944. Prior to joining the Women's Army Corps, she attended the Chevalier Beauty School in New Orleans. She honorably served during World War II in the U.S. Army, which is also when she met her husband, Gordon, at Camp Edwards in Massachusetts. She served as a member of VFW Post 7234, Ocean View, American Legion Post 28, Millsboro, and St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, Georgetown.
Mrs. Ellis loved traveling with her husband to Spain, Paris and Africa, but most of all traveling home to Louisiana every year. She cherished her Southern heritage and family. She enjoyed dancing, reading, laughing and enjoying life to the fullest.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Ellis was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Gordon Ellis; and her three siblings who resided in Louisiana. She is survived by her two daughters: Susan McNatt and her husband Jerry of Millsboro, and Sharon Montague of Millsboro; two granddaughters: Pamela Montague and her significant other John Peters of Lewes, and Amy Russell and her husband Kirk of Salisbury, Md.; and great-grandchildren: David, Anjaliece and Clayton.
The family would like to acknowledge and show gratitude to the staff of the Delaware Veterans Home, especially those who welcomed her as the first lady to reside there in 2007, and treated her with such dignity and respect through to her last days as a part of their family. Additionally, the family would like to thank Delaware Hospice for their concern of her care and needs.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, April 16, 2013, at 12:30 p.m., at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 202 Edward St., Georgetown, where friends may visit beginning at noon. Interment with military honors will immediately follow Mass at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.
