Robert T. Brown Jr., avid sailor

Robert T. Brown Jr., 77, of Rehoboth Beach passed away peacefully Sunday, March 3, 2013, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was born Oct. 16, 1935, in Queens, N.Y., son of the late Robert Tracy Sr. and Marjory (Dunham) Brown.

Mr. Brown was a 1958 graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park Campus, where he earned his bachelor of arts degree in business administration. While there, Mr. Brown was awarded the Bronze Buck Award for the Outstanding Fraternity Man on campus. He was selected for his outstanding service to fraternities. He was the fraternity representative to the University of Maryland’s Student Government Association, past secretary of The Interfraternal Council, past Greek Week Chairman, and was VEEP and acting president of Alpha Tau Omega. Mr. Brown was also a member of Omicron Delta Kappa; he was selected one of the 10 top seniors and was featured in “Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities.” Mr. Brown was an active member of the University of Maryland and ATO Fraternity Alumni.

He enjoyed a 48-year career with Prudential Insurance where he qualified numerous years for the MDRT and Presidents Club Conference. His love of the insurance industry led to establishing Business Insurance Management Inc., a prestigious insurance brokerage firm with his business partner, Wendell Johnson, in Bethesda, Md. Together they insured the residents, corporations and numerous embassies in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area.

Mr. Brown was a member of the Annapolis Yacht Club and was an experienced bay and blue water sailor. He thoroughly loved sailing with his wife, Barbara, and especially enjoyed their many sailing adventures to Palm Island in the Grenadines and the British Virgin Islands. His interests also included listening to Frank Sinatra, tennis, deer and goose hunting, and most definitely football. Mr. Brown was an avid Washington Redskins fan, being a season ticket holder for 50-plus years. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and brother who will be missed by all who knew him.

Mr. Brown is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Barbara B. Brown; his three daughters, Tracy Brown-Adkins and her husband Joe of Lewes, Jennifer Verklin and her husband Robert of Annapolis, Md., and Christine Brown, MD, and her husband Jim Head of Dallas, Texas; his brother, Stephen L. Brown and his wife Sunny of Lyons, Colo.; six grandchildren: Robert Adkins and his wife Lori, Andrew Adkins, Matthew Verklin, Nicholas Verklin, Emily Verklin and Samantha Glamann; and his beloved black lab, Sir Chase of Summer Crest, better known as Devil Dog.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 4, at St. Anne's Episcopal Church, Church Circle, Annapolis. Flowers will be welcome.
