April 19, 2013

The Lower Sussex County NAACP held its monthly meeting on April 11 at Prospect AME Church Hall in Georgetown. Plans were discussed for the upcoming Freedom Fund dinner to be held Sept. 14 at Grace United Methodist Church Hall in Georgetown as well as the Regional Conference to be held in Pittsburgh Friday and Saturday, April 26-27.

President Jane Hovington led a discussion on the local chapter’s support of statewide efforts to curb gun violence through legislation and outreach programs. Hovington also reiterated the local NAACP’s support of the state NAACP conference’s work to repeal the death penalty in Delaware.

The state conference was recently commended by NAACP Criminal Justice Director Dr. Niaz Kasravi for its efforts:

“We applaud President Richard Smith and the Delaware State Conference for their work to end an ineffective, broken, and immoral policy that drains financial resources from our justice system - resources that could be used to catch criminals that are still on the streets.”

Pictured at the meeting are NAACP members, standing, (l-r) Mitch Crane, Kit Zak, Bill Zak, Louise Henry, Therman Hopkins, Marie Mayor and Pastor Marvin Morris; seated are Manuel Davis, Barbara Malone, Margaret Hopkins, Jane Hovington and Helen LaClair.
