Equality Delaware is a statewide organization working to ensure and promote dignity, safety, and equality for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender Delawareans. Equality Delaware -- along with local advocates and coalition partners -- successfully advocated for the passage of a civil union bill, which was signed into law on May 11, 2011 by Governor Jack Markell.
Equality Delaware is now in the midst of the effort to legalize same-sex marriage in Delaware. If the Supreme Court rules in June that the federal government has to allow same-sex married couples the same benefits as heterosexual couples, Delawareans will not get federal benefits, unless marriage equality is passed in Delaware. As outside groups against marriage equality are mobilizing in the state, Equality Delaware is working to ensure that the Delaware legislature will join nine other states and the District of Columbia in guaranteeing marriage equality to all its citizens.
