Johnny and Ronnie march into Legends Stadium coaching Dover lacrosse

Cape wins 9-5 but game is a dogfight
April 19, 2013

Johnny and Ronnie came marching into Legends Stadium April 17, leading the Dover Senators lacrosse team into battle against favored Cape Henlopen.

Cape usually tortures the Senators, treating them to a double-digit loss as they have each of the last three years.  In fact, Dover has never beaten Cape in lacrosse.

But coaches Coveleski and Allen, with more than 60 combined coached seasons on their records and another 60 on the Rehoboth Beach Patrol always bring the dogs to the junkyard for off-the-chain, teeth-bared managed mayhem.

The game was 5-3 in favor of Cape entering the fourth quarter and ended in a 9-5 Cape victory with each team putting 30 shots on goal. Neither coaching staff seemed pleased with the outcome, with Coveleski telling his team, “I am proud with how hard you played tonight, but we left one out there. A defensive lapse here and there and missing too many close-in shots cost us, but you played hard.”

Cape’s Tony Iammatteo was active and quick in goal, making 11 saves, while Dover’s MacKenzie Ware, just a sophomore and a big old rascal, had 7 saves.

Cape’s Little Big Man, Blake Mann, bounced around like a pinball the entire game, scored 3 for the Vikings including one in the third quarter while lying on the turf.

Todd Keen and Michael Hopkins each scored two goals, while Luke Benson and Justin Lopez each scored one.

Benson had 3 assists for a 4-point game - Todd Keen and Kyle Orton - also had an assist.

Dover was paced in goals by Ryan McQuaide 2, Asani Edmunds, Nate Valenti and Jordan Robinson.

Dover dropped to 6-3 on the season and next plays at Delmar April 22. The Senators had six games remaining, all in the winnable category, which would make them 12-3 and a tournament team and a potential nightmare waiting for someone to go to sleep on them.

Cape improved to 6-2 and will host Salesianum Saturday, April 20, with the junior varsity beginning at 4 p.m. and varsity at 5:30.

Notes: The Saturday game versus Sallies is a Brian Tappan fundraiser with silent auction, lots of donated baked goods and No. 33 T-shirts for sale.
