Bombs at Boston Marathon; many locals in race

Linda Chi just two minutes past finish line blast
April 20, 2013

I lived in Boston for 12 years, and my extended family is scattered all throughout Massachusetts. Many people I know in the state stop everything they are doing on Patriots Day Monday and go to watch the Boston Marathon. Delaware sends a busload of runners by way of the Doug White Bus Trip to the race, and several runners travel on their own. Boston is unlike all other marathons because you must qualify for the race by hitting an entry standard to get in. Rehoboth Beach runners Marybeth Evans, Linda Schwartz-Chi, Linda Reck and Brandt Chi were the runners I was tracking throughout the day. As I was putting my middle school team of Energizer Bunny adolescent 13-year-olds through their workout, my phone started ringing off the hook. I had text messages and calls coming in so fast I could not keep up with them all. The running world suffered a blow as one of the premier events in the world, the Boston Marathon, ended in horror as two bombs went off at the 4:10:00 mark as thousands of runners were heading to the finish line. My late brother John had taken me to the finish when I was younger, and he had introduced me to his BAA training partners by the name of Bill Rogers and Greg Meyer when I was in elementary school. I immediately called Marybeth, and for the first time ever she did not answer her phone, which is usually attached to her right ear. No answer from Linda or Brandt either, as I did not know that cellphone service was shut down.

Beacon girls prepare for invite

The Beacon girls track & field team moved to 8-0 on the season and are getting ready for the make-up Jim Blades Invite next Friday at Lake Forest High School. The girls beat Woodbridge this week 100-9, while the boys won 70-39. The longtime hurdle record, set in 2006 by Maxine Fluharty, fell as Dajante Mackey ran 8.6, shattering the mark. Seth DePrince set a new high jump school record at 5-feet-4, while the girls’ 400m relay of Annie Judge, Katie Frederick, Lerah Boyer and Mackey just missed setting a new mark. Eighth-grade distance runner Ben Bamforth won three events and ran the mile in 5:05 with no one pushing him and was one second off the school record of 5:04 set in 2011 by old brother Jake. Ben is trying to become the first middle school runner in the Henlopen Conference to ever break five minutes in the mile.

Mariner Middle traveled to Selbyville, falling 76-33 with highlights that include a 100-meter win by Freddie Ealy in 12.2. Jerry Harden won the 1,600 meters in 5:48, while Carroll Kazuki won the 800 meters in 2:42. Raiquan Mosley won the high jump in 5-2 and the discus in 99-0. On the girls’ side Vanessa Luis won the 800 meters in 2:55 and the 1,600 meters in 6:19.

Niyashja Mosely won the 55-meter hurdles in 11.0, while Lakendra Harpe won the 100 meters in 13.9. Chakyriah Wright won the 200 meters in 29.5 and the long jump in 12-0. Kara Hignutt won the high jump in 4-2.
