Sussex Tech Ravens selected for annual Blue-Gold football game

Several Sussex Technical High School students have been selected to participate in the 2013 Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game Program. The 58th annual football game will be played at the University of Delaware Stadium June 22.

Chosen to represent Sussex Tech are cheerleaders Ashley Jump of Laurel, Jessica Lux of Lewes, and Sarah Timmons of Millsboro; junior ambassadors are Jada Burbage of Seaford and Shelby McBroom of Bridgeville; football player is Marshall Brown of Lewes; and senior ambassadors are Taylor Hatfield of Georgetown, Stephen Mervine of Bridgeville and Paige Robinson ofGeorgetown.

All high school participants play a vital role in the success of the DFRC Blue-Gold program and in the DFRC mission to enrich the lives of Delawareans with intellectual disabilities. Since the initial orientation sessions in January, many of the Blue-Gold participants have met their hand-in-hand buddies at a dance party in Dover, and over the weekend of April 14, they went bowling with their buddies.

The first annual Blue-Gold football game was founded by Bob Carpenter and Jim Williams, two local sports enthusiasts who were the parents of children with intellectual disabilities. While there were nationwide campaigns to collect funds for individuals with physical disabilities, there were no local fundraising campaigns to help people with intellectual disabilities.

Since 1956, the football game has raised money to help improve the lives of hundreds of Delaware children with intellectual disabilities. The money is used to support programs that encourage individuals with intellectual disabilities to maximize their potential, independence and enjoyment of life.
