Opening day but no games in Lewes

Muddy fields postpone first-day action

The streets of Lewes were filled with the screams of 600 boys and girls April 20 taking part in Lewes Little League's traditional opening-day parade.

Because of a heavy downpour the night before, the league's three fields along the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal were not playable. However, that didn't diminish the excitement and enthusiasm for opening day.

Each of the teams, their sponsors and coaches were introduced by new Lewes Little League President Mike Ciabattoni. This year's league has 27 teams of players up to the major league age group. Players in junior, senior and big league play in the Cape Little League program.

Andy and Carrie Lewis, longtime volunteers, were honored during opening day by throwing out the first pitches. Andy served as league president for nearly a decade.
