Clear Space to present '9 to 5: The Musical' starting May 3

May 2, 2013

The Clear Space Theatre Company in Rehoboth Beach will present "9 to 5: The Musical" with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton and book by Patricia Resnick. The hit 1980 film "9 to 5" was broadened into a musical by Grammy Award winner Dolly Parton, and this 2009 Broadway version offers even more show-stopping songs, hijinks and hilarity. Jaded matriarch Violet (Jenn Rowan), buxom backwoods secretary Doralee (Abby Toomey) and mistreated newcomer Judy (Erin Williams) all work for overbearing womanizer Franklin Hart Jr. (David Warick). The three ladies team up to get even with their egotistical, tyrannical boss. This madcap show is part Broadway, part pop, a little bit country and all toe-tapping fun.

The cast also includes an ensemble of characters played by Carissa Meiklejohn, Matt Mullineaux, Daniel Meloy, Mary O’Neill, Christa Pardocchi, Marian Sunnergren, Alison Krauss, Kelsey Murphy, Kevin Smith, Matt King, Max Dick and Jake Darley.

David Button, Clear Space’s company manager and director of the show, did a lot of homework prior to going into rehearsals. Because authenticity is important to this production, he sought advice from a number of women who worked in offices in the 1970s. Using the feedback from their work experiences, he was better able to set the tone of the show. Audience members who lived through the 1970s and 1980s will delight in returning to the past, while younger viewers will find humor in the office politics and shenanigans of the '70s.

Tickets are available through the box office, 302-227-2270, or at www.ClearSpaceTheatre.org. Group rates are available.
