Cape Water Taxi to launch second season May 17 with weekend service

New vessel, new services, new location to be introduced
May 10, 2013

Cape Water Taxi is about to launch its second season of providing beach-area residents and visitors an alternative way of commuting between beach locations, away from the overly congested streets. A second vessel, two new services and a third location will be introduced this season. Beginning Friday, May 17, Cape Water Taxi will operate on weekends only until it transitions into a full, seven-day-a-week schedule Friday, June 14.

For this 2013 season, the fledgling business has added a second vessel, The Discovery, a 54-foot custom-built beauty. It features twin 150 HP engines, two restrooms and comfortable seating for 72 people. Also new for 2013, in addition to Water Taxi Service, Eco Tours and Sunset Cruises, passengers will be able to choose a new cruise called To the Bay and Back. Offered at 2 p.m. on weekdays, this will be a 2-hour cruise originating in Lewes. It will travel down the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, into the Rehoboth Bay and then return to Lewes.

Also new this year will be a 90-minute Kid’s Camp out of Long Neck, offering children an opportunity to learn more about the inland waterways and try their hand at crabbing, line fishing and even casting a net to see what lies beneath the water’s surface. The Discovery will also be available for private charters for any type of celebration such as weddings, birthdays, graduations, promotions, or to just plain party.

2013 will offer residents and visitors to the Long Neck area, including The Peninsula, the opportunity to experience Eco Tours, Sunset Cruises and other fun trips aboard The Mummichog, a 35-foot tri-toon that seats 26 passengers comfortably. Cape Water Taxi will operate seven days a week with trips originating at Bayside’s Paradise Grill docks. Bayside is a Pot-Nets community on Long Neck Road.

The spring schedule, May 17-June 13, will be an abbreviated Water Taxi schedule, operating on Friday evenings, Saturday and Sunday only from Lewes’ Fisherman’s Wharf:

  • Friday evening departure from Lewes: 6 p.m. Departure from Dewey will be 7:30 p.m.

  • Saturday departures from Lewes: 11:30 a.m., 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Departures from Dewey will be at 1, 4 and 7 p.m.

  • Sunday departures from Lewes: 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Departures from Dewey will be at 1 and 4 p.m.

Reservations are recommended and can be made at www.capewatertaxi.com or by calling 302-644-7334. Tickets will also be sold at the dock.

Adult water taxi fares are $20 round trip and $15 one way. Children's water taxi fares (ages 3-10) are $15 round trip and $7 one way.

Owner Dave Green says, “We had a tremendous response from the local residents and visitors to the southern Delaware beach communities last season, and we are really grateful for the support. This year, with the addition of The Discovery, the new cruises and expanding to include the Long Neck communities, we will be able to operate seven days a week. If you visit southern Delaware and you haven’t been on any of our inland waterways, especially the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, you just haven’t been here! We are looking forward to a fantastic season and welcoming our previous and new customers to the Cape Water Taxi experience.”

Cape Water Taxi summer schedule is available at www.capewatertaxi.com, by calling 302-644-7334 and on Facebook. Residents and visitors will also see the schedule and an accompanying $2 off coupon in newspapers and information racks throughout the beach communities.
