Cape girls' lacrosse loses at Queen Anne's 11-9
A titanic battle went down May 4 between Delmarva’s two premier girls' lacrosse teams, both undefeated, featuring Cape Henlopen at Queen Anne’s County High School in Centreville, Md. The game was won by the Lions 11-9, ending Cape’s streak of 40 straight wins.
"They are a very good team with 12 seniors and seven Division I players who beat Mt. Hebron in the semifinals then lost in the public school state championship final last year to Century," said Coach P.J. Kesmodel. Cape lost for the first time since an April 9, 2011, 16-12 loss at the Severn School.
The game was played on a clumpy grass and dirt field, and no doubt the Vikings had trouble picking up ground balls. But the girls had the most trouble with senior goalie Gabby Antonelli, who had 14 saves while facing an onslaught of 33 shots.
“We played hard and did some things very well, but shooting wasn’t one of them," Kesmodel said. “And they are a very good team; you just have to cash in on opportunities if you expect to beat them.”
The Lions generated 21 shots on Cape goalie Sam Broadhurst, who had 6 saves on the day.
Cape was paced in scoring by Anna Frederick 3, Sara Young 2, Karalyn Joseph 2, and single goals from Allie Yeager and Jordan Brown. Frederick and Yeager each had an assist.
Queen Anne’s was led by Kallie German 4, Mollie Stevens 3, Ali Moulis 2, Taylor Blick 1 and Anna O’Donnell 1.
Cape, 11-1, has three regular-season games remaining: away at Caesar Rodney Wednesday, May 8, followed by 7 p.m. home games Friday, May 10, versus Tower Hill and Wednesday, May 15, versus Sussex Tech
On May 2 Cape traveled to once-beaten Charter in Wilmington and beat the Force 19-6. Allie Yeager and Jordan Brown each scored 4 followed by Anna Frederick 3, Sara Young and Karalyn Joseph 2, and single goals by Lexi Woodruff, Sarah Tappan, Riley Wagner and Karissa Lemaire.
Charter goals were scored by Morgan Laney 2, Alexandra Mash 2, Josephine Nixon 1 and Jordan Wood 1.
