Blessing of the Fleet held in Lewes

May 12, 2013

The Blessing of the Fleet was held at Fisherman’s Wharf in Lewes May 5. At this annual event, local pastors bless the fleet and say prayers for safe passages and a bountiful harvest and also hold a remembrance of sailors who have passed in the last year.

The ceremony started with a prayer by Chris Miller of Groome United Methodist Church. Following the prayer, the Sailors Psalm, Psalm 107:23-32 was read by Jane Smith of Groome United Methodist Church, and the reading of Matthew 8:23-27 was done by Retta Rose Frampton. The Laying of the Wreath, remembering Capt. Joe Corkran, who passed in the last year, followed the readings.

Shown is the wreath being laid by John Webber with assistance from Sean Thorton on board the Adventurer II piloted by Capt. Mike Cerchio.
