Cooking Channel to feature Ice Cream Social and Taste-Testing Contest

Field crew to film May 9 event
May 7, 2013

It’s time for lights, cameras and action in Rehoboth Beach as a field production crew from The Cooking Channel appears at The Ice Cream Store to film owner Chip Hearn’s Sixth Annual Ice Cream Social and Taste-Testing Contest from 1 to 7 p.m., Thursday, May 9.

“Holy wowza!” Hearn exclaimed. “A trip to the Boardwalk is supposed to be fun, and what can be more fun than this? Everyone gets to taste 21 new flavors, and have a chance to be on national TV while they’re doing it!”

Producer Sheri Spitz of Susie Films Production Company says the show is scheduled to air on The Cooking Channel Sunday, July 14, to open a weeklong series about the best ice cream in the country. Spitz is working with Executive Producer Scott Galloway and Field Producer John McCalley to produce the television ice cream special.

After filming the event, the film crew will be going to the Woodside Farm Creamery in Hockessin. The dairy farm has been owned and operated by the Mitchell family for seven generations, and is Hearn’s sole supplier of the cream uses to make all of his ice cream.

“They’re happy cows, and happy cows make great ice cream,” Hearn says, and though no one is positive what the secret to his success is, that may well be part of it. Referred to as the “ice cream maker extraordinaire” by the Associated Press, Hearn’s The Ice Cream Store has been praised as one of the top seven ice cream dipping stores in the country by Reader’s Digest, and named as home to one of the most inventive ice cream flavors in the country by Newsweek magazine.

During the May 9 event, the public is invited to taste and vote on 21 new ice cream flavors to determine which will earn a coveted place among The Ice Cream Store’s list of summer flavors - a list that includes some of the most unique award-winning flavors in the country. The event drew nearly 1,000 participants in 2012.

Among this year’s new ice cream flavors are Crack These Big Nuts, This Ish Is Off The Hook, Dirt, Peeps, Breakfast in Bed, Blood Orange Mango, Sour Cherry, The Fig’s Up, Mint Milano, Minty Python, Chocolate Rum Raisin, Philly Butter Cake and What Would Jimmy Buffett Do? It’s 5 O’Clock Somewhere.

The Ice Cream Store is on the south side of Rehoboth Avenue at the Boardwalk in Rehoboth Beach. For information call 302-227-4609 or go to RehobothIceCream.com.
