Thanks for passing background check bill

May 13, 2013

I would like to thank the legislators and especially Sen. Ernie Lopez, my district representative, who voted for the background checks done on every purchase of a firearm in Delaware.

I was quite surprised that everyone did not have to have a background check for the purchases. This will only attempt to keep the “bad guys” from the purchase, not stop them, but it will not hurt and may slow them down. It sometimes seem that laws are made for the “Good Guys” who don't violate the laws to be able to add a more severe punishment for the violators.

I have to have a background check when I purchase a firearm at a gun shop and I am a retired New Castle County law enforcement officer. Thank you Ernie and all the rest who helped pass this law. I believe even some of the ones who didn't vote for the passage secretly wanted it to pass to at least attempt to give a little more security for their family, but as some things go, the political peer pressure by some groups does not always consider the best interest of all.
