Rehoboth Farmers Market launching pad for Locals Tuesday

Bagpipe music filled the air as Rehoboth Beach Farmers Market opened May 7.
Clouds and drizzle did not keep away the enthusiastic market crowd.
Vendors offered fresh lettuce, granola mixes, honey, rhubarb, breads, lavender, soap and colorful salsas and guacamole. Espuma restaurant offered a live cooking demonstration, and market officials sold messenger bags, shopping totes and raffle tickets.
Gretchen Hanson of Hobo's Restaurant in Rehoboth said the market will really kick off next week with the first Locals Tuesday.
Hanson, Alyssa Titus of Azura Clothing, Heidi Lowe of Heidi Lowe Galleries and Anne-Marie Westerfield of Rehoboth Beach Main Street, have been planning Locals Tuesday for months and have gotten many local merchants on board. Titus also coordinates the popular Cocoa Crawl and Get Down in Town events.
“We want to capitalize on our award-winning farmers market and bring people downtown with fun local events, unplugged music, farm to table menus and retail events,” Hanson said.
“Many business owners in town are extremely excited about the prospect of extending the Farmer's Market to include other in-town venues,” Titus said. “Local's Tuesday will be a fun day downtown where we will offer one day specials and have fun events year round.”
Each week, Locals Tuesday will feature specials in participating shops downtown and a wooden nickel exchange, Hanson said.
On Tuesdays, residents can pick up wooden nickels at select restaurants, shops, hotels and salons in Rehoboth. The tokens can be exchanged at second location for a free gift, Hanson said.
“It's a day and night event,” Hanson said. “Residents can enjoy the farmers market until 4 p.m., then go downtown for local farm-to-table menus and specials.”
Hobo's will also have weekly events starting Tuesday, May 14, when NPR does a live feed from the restaurant, she said. All of the Hobo's staff will be donning fashion apparel from Azura and makeup by Bad Hair Day. Hanson will feature a strawberry-infused vodka called Pinkie Pies for the event.
Participating businesses include Hobos, The Running Company, Cake Break, Carltons, Sea Shell Shop, Bad Hair Day and Hula Sue.
Mosaic's Second Saturday will also return this year with an art walk, entertainment and a contest for the favorite window art at local stores from 6 to 9 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month.
