Run for Mom May 11 at Remembrance Run in Lewes

May 10, 2013

This Saturday morning, May 11, will mark the fifth annual Mother’s Day Remembrance 5K Run to be held at 9 a.m. at Cape Henlopen High School in Lewes. There will also be a 1-mile walk on the track. Registration will be held from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. for a fee of $25. Tech Ts are guaranteed to the first 100 registrants. The 5K course will begin at Cape Henlopen High School and exit the back of the school to Savannah Road. Runners will follow Savannah Road to Beebe Avenue and onto Kings Highway, heading back to the school. Once in the stadium, runners will finish on the opposite (visitors') side for the 3.11-mile distance. Awards will be presented to the overall and masters winners, as well as top three finishers in the following age groups: 9 & U, 10-13, 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70 & O. Come honor Mom and race in her memory…see you on the starting line!

Roady & Camp Barnes

Just under 200 runners and walkers showed up May 4 to support the Roady 5K held at Delaware Tech in Georgetown. The runners were treated to a beautiful two-loop course on campus followed by a Mexican lunch catered by Rehoboth’s Cilantro Restaurant. Enos Benbow won the overall title with a 17:46 jog through campus. Mardiny Ung finished 12th to win the overall female title.

On Sunday, more than 200 runners and walkers turned out for the annual Camp Barnes 5K, 10K and 1M walk through Assawoman Wildlife Refuge outside Bethany Beach. A pizza and burger lunch was served to the participants. Rodriguez Martin won the overall male 5K title in 19:47, while Kimberly Haley finished seventh to win the overall female 5K in 22:07. Chris Stanley easily took the 10K title in 42:11, while Jennie Cawthern won the 10K female title in 44:34.

The shirts were nice, awards top notch, but I really believe the post-race food is beginning to be the favorite item of the road race. “Hey, did you hear the course was short by 50 feet?” “Who cares about the course? Let’s go get a hot dog and a burger and I’ll take one of those tacos with hot sauce, too.”

Beacon track has record-setting season

Some seasons you want to forget and some seasons you never want to end. This spring, I was lucky enough to coach alongside longtime friend Gilbert Maull as we put together a season we will never forget. We juggled athletes around throughout the 13 events trying to find the best fit where the kids would be the most successful in. The boys finished 7-3 and broke three records as Seth DePrince jumped 5-feet-7-inches in the high jump to dominate the event. Distance runner Ben Bamforth finished his middle school career in dominant style as he ran 5:01.6 in the 1,600 meters and 2:18.0 in the 800 meters, setting two new Beacon records, both previously held by brother Jake. The girls' team finished 10-0, their second straight undefeated season, and have not lost a meet since 2011. The girls also won both invitationals, the Blades Invite and the Delaware Middle School Classic.  Five new records were set during the season, led by the 400-meter relay record of 54.5 set by Annie Judge, Katie Frederick, Lerah Boyer and DaJonte Mackey. The oldest record on the track was also broken as the 800-m relay record of 1:57.1 fell to the foursome of Mackey, Frederick, Zoe Scott and sixth-grader Alia Marshall, who ran away from the field in the May 3 Cape Middle School Invitational, clocking a 1:56.6. Judge broke the long jump record, leaping 14-11, while Scott tied the high jump record with a leap of 4-10. Finally, Mackey shattered the 55-m hurdle record of 9.3 with a clocking of 8.6 seconds over five hurdles. Several of the Beacon athletes are ranked in the top 20 nationwide: Bamforth in the 1,600m, DePrince in the high jump, Mackey in the hurdles, Logan Shuttleworth in the 1,600m and Scott in the high jump. Jordyn Miller was the high scorer in the May 3 meet, winning the long jump on her final jump, taking second in the discus and third in the shot put for 24 points and the best track meet of her career. Miller had one week of practice after learning the discus and only 48 hours of practice after learning the shot put, which sums up the season a bit. Wherever we placed the kids in the lineup, they performed well and make us coaches look like we knew what we were doing. A season coach Bamforth and coach Maull will never forget!
