Hobies return to Lewes and Delaware Bay

LYC hosts northeast championships
May 19, 2013

It's been a few years since Hobie catamarans have raced on Delaware Bay.

That all changed this past weekend when Lewes Yacht Club hosted the 2013 Hobie Class Northeast Region Championships.

After practice on May 10, sailors participated in seven races May 11 and May 12, enduring rain and storms the first day and a stiff wind the second day. The wind picked up and most racers did not finish the final race.

In the close Hobie 16 competition, the team of Rich McVeigh and Carol Hilk of Laurel, Md., finished on top by one point over the team of Wally Myers and Janet Payne of Marmora, N.J., and two points over the team of Geoff Baker and Krista Hankins of Arnold, Md.

In Hobie 17 competition, Steve Myer of Wall, N.J., was first, followed by Greg Rayborn of Shrewsbury, N.J., in second and Bill Kast of Nazareth, Pa., in third place.

In Hobie 18 competition, Jim Doty Jr. and Barbie Doty of Bowie, Md., finished in first place followed by David Raughley and Isabelle Strasser of Avondale, Pa., in second place and Keith and Marie Strasser of Frederick, Md., in third place.
