American Legion Auxiliary presents awards to student winners

June 4, 2013

American Legion Auxiliary Unit 28 had a busy month presenting several awards to students in the area. Four $1,000 scholarships were presented to Krystal Pearce of Indian River High School, Rose Rinker of Sussex Central High School and Christopher Clifton and Sarah Timmons of Sussex Tech High School.

At the Sussex Central JROTC Awards Banquet and Change of Command, the Academic Excellence Medal was awarded to Cadet Stacy Roberts and the Scholastic Achievement Medal to Cadet Blake Fritz.

The auxiliary presented Certificates of Participation and $25 Walmart gift cards to the essay winners at Long Neck Elementary and to social studies teacher Terry Kansak, who inspired her students to write and submit the essays.  Forty essays were submitted for the annual Americanism essay contest that encourages students to learn about the rights and freedoms they enjoy every day. This year's theme was What Freedom Do I Enjoy the Most? The winning essays were forwarded to the Auxiliary Department of Delaware’s Americanism chair, where they will be judged on the state level.
