Rehoboth Art League’s Heritage Artists: Birth of an Art Community opens June 14

Heritage show paired with 75th Members Fine Art Exhibition
June 9, 2013

A special month-long exhibition, Heritage Artists: Birth of an Art Community, will honor works from 17 artists, each involved in the early years of the Rehoboth Art League. This artwork and the memorabilia in the exhibition are from the league’s historic permanent collection. Twenty-nine works will be on display from June 14 through July 14. The Mediums include oil, watercolor, photography, gouache, pencil, mezzotint and woodblock prints.

Ann Horsey, the curator of the show, said, Heritage Artists: Birth of an Art Community highlights those artists who were influential and present in the beginning years of the RAL in the 1930s and1940s. Many were personal friends of Louise and Col. Wilbur S. Corkran, founders of the league, and most taught classes and took part in activities to ensure that the RAL would become an integral part of the community. Of the 17 artists featured in the exhibit, 11 signed the first Doors of Fame at the dedication ceremony in June 1938, with four others signing it later. The portraits of both Corkran will be on view along with the works of their artist friends.”

The Heritage Artists Show is paired with the favorite Members Fine Art Exhibition for the 75th Anniversary celebration of the Rehoboth Art League. Both exhibitions are underwritten by PNC Wealth Management and run through July 14. The historic Homestead and the galleries are open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Sunday noon to 4 p.m. The public is invited to the opening receptions from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, June 14.
