Summer Spirituality Series June 20: Kim Bevis on Spirituality of Yoga

June 11, 2013

Kim Bemis, world traveler and educator, will lead a session, The Spirituality of Yoga, at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 20, as part of St. Peter's Summer Spirituality Series. There will be a discussion as well as a video presentation.

Bemis, originally from Ocean View, has been living in an ashram in the Himalayas in India for the past 13 years. There, he has been studying and teaching yoga and transcendental meditation. People often think of yoga as a type of meditation and physical exercise for relaxation and stress release. Yoga accomplishes this, but it is also a profound spiritual practice that develops one’s full potential.

Transcendental meditation is a natural, effortless technique with practical results. Seven hundred scientific studies show that TM increases energy and creativity, and improves health and social behavior. This includes 50 percent fewer deaths from heart attacks and strokes, and 50 percent less hospitalization for all diseases. As more people find success and fulfillment in their own lives, positive trends in society will increase, laying the basis for world peace.

From 7 to 8:30 p.m., each Thursday night through Aug. 29, expert presenters will engage participants in the parish hall of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, at 211 Mulberry St., Lewes. Fellowship and locally owned King's Ice Cream will follow each presentation. All are invited to attend these free sessions, which are designed for reflection and dialogue. It is a chance to learn more about a fascinating topic and engage in subsequent discussion.

In addition to providing spiritual resources for those seeking greater understanding of their own religious, or learning about others, Seekers uses the net proceeds from their store to help those in need, including the Cape Henlopen Food Basket, Doctors without Borders, work in Haiti and Centro Infantil in San Miguel de Allende.
