Cape Region volunteers are mobilizing to help a small Oklahoma town recover from last month's devastating tornado.

Becky Carney and Bobbi Engel are organizing Show you Care, Send a Pair to help the residents of Bethel, Okla.

The two women, who also traveled to Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina, are collecting donations of new underwear and socks for men, women and children.

"People are depending on church groups and living in tents," Carney said.

Joining Carney and Engel are Denny and Judy Quillen, Tony Etze and Andy Buehler. The six volunteers will leave for Oklahoma Thursday, June 20, with several vehicles and a Bobcat.

"There's nothing like a pack of new underwear when you've lost everything," Engel said, adding that residents of smaller towns can be forgotten during natural disaster cleanups.

The group is also seeking donations of gas cards to help volunteers pay for the two-day drive to Oklahoma. During the week-long trip, the experienced team of volunteers will use chainsaws and machinery to help remove debris, getting residents one step closer to a normal life.

Federal aid has not yet reached Bethel, Carney said.

The group plans to get an idea of the true needs in Bethel during the trip, then return to the Cape Region to continue fundraising. Carney said they could make another trip in the fall if needed, otherwise they will ship items to the town.

All donations can be dropped off at Atlantic Liquors near Rehoboth Beach, Sussex Tree on Route 24, County Bank locations in Rehoboth and Lewes and Just Comfort Shoes on Route 1, near Starbucks.

Monetary donations can be dropped off at County Bank and made payable to Coastal Delaware Volunteers or mailed to P.O. Box 1, Harbeson, DE 19951.
