June 18, 2013

Former United States Olympian Carrie Lingo has brought her Elite Connection Summer Club 2013 to Cape Henlopen's second turf field Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays to help athletes get the most out of their summer workouts and become stronger and well-rounded.

"I'm using everything that I used to get me ready for the Olympics," said the 1997 Cape grad who played for the U.S. Hockey squad in the 2012 Beijing Olympics.

The club workouts take place from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and also focus on injury prevention by using stretching, running on turf and the beach as well as the Lazy River at Jungle Jim's Water Park.

"We track their heart rate as well as their water weight loss during the sessions," says Lingo. "This helps them keep their hydration at the proper level."

The Tuesday workouts focus is on endurance where Thursday's aim is to increase the athletes speed. Fridays are used to advance the hockey skills of the athlete.

"The whole Olympic team dropped their 40-yard dash time using our beach workout," said the 2002 UNC graduate. "Then the Jungle Jim's Lazy River workout takes the pressure off the legs.

"It's so much fun to work with the girls," smiled Lingo. "We have girls from many different schools."

Athletes from Cape, Milford, Sussex Tech, Worcester and others are advancing their skills while attending the camp. The camp is open to all athletes who want to increase their strength and conditioning.

"I really like the camp," says rising eighth-grader Cassidy Best from Mariner Middle. "It's getting me in great shape for the upcoming hockey season."

"The Friday workouts are helping to improve my stick skills," said rising Cape senior Lindsey Voss. I'm learning a lot about the game and I'm getting me in shape."

"I've been playing hockey since kindergarten," says Cape's Sydney Smyk. "And I've learned so much from Carrie in just a few sessions. I love the camp."

The Summer Club 2013 is a part of the Elite Connection Hockey Camp that will take place July 9-12. For more information about the Elite Connection Club 2013 or the Elite Connection Hockey Camp go to eliteconnectioncamps.com or call Carrie Lingo at 302-344-9188.
