In 14 years of business, Kathy Pasqualini, owner of Pasqualini's Bakery, said she's never seen a top cave in like that.
Just weeks ago, the heavy downpours of Tropical Storm Andrea accumulated and caused the flat roof of Pasqualini's Bakery to collapse, compromising the wiring and interior of her bakery.
Fortunately, all was not lost, Pasqualini said, as she has been able to continue baking through restorations to the store at 37650 Atlantic Ave. off Rehoboth Avenue Extended.
Now Pasqualini is looking forward to a facelift for the bakery and opening its doors by Independence Day.
"It just completely caved in," she said of the bakery's rooftop. "It's going to be a whole new storefront and have a whole new look."
Until then, the baker has done her best to stay busy, supplying stands at the Rehoboth, Lewes, Milton and upcoming Fenwick farmers markets with a variety of baked goods such as pastries, breads, muffins, pies and cakes.
Rehoboth resident Brenda Kriegel stopped by Pasqualini's stand at the Rehoboth market recently to pick up a blueberry-cherry pie for a dinner party she was attending.
Kriegel said she has visited the bakery several times since she recently relocated permanently to Rehoboth Beach.
"It's generally very good," she said.
Still, employee Martha Patrick said the bakery has taken a financial hit after being forced to close its doors for most of the month of June.
"We are losing a lot of business while the repairs are being done," Patrick said. "But it's going to look great when we reopen."
