Three races on tap

The Shadow Series, a popular small group of races held last year and organized by local Dan MacElrevey, will kick off the first of three this Friday, June 21, at Cape Henlopen State Park. The Summer Solstice will offer a 5K and a 10K that will begin at 7 p.m. from the pavilion just north of the main beach parking lot. Enjoy the Mid-Atlantic’s only series of night runs and the beauty of Cape Henlopen State Park in a totally new way. Run with your senses fully engaged. The Shadow Series will also host two more events this year as the Firefly 5K & 10K will be held Saturday July 27, and the Labor Day 5K & 10K will be held Saturday, Aug. 31.

The popular Jungle Jim’s 5K will be the second event this weekend; it will be held on Saturday in Rehoboth Beach, while the Bill Degnan 5K will take off from Cape Henlopen High School on Sunday.

The 27th Mile

This week I spoke with the editor of the new book, "The 27th Mile,"  an anthology. His name is Ray Charbonneau. I asked him if I could place his information in my column this week as a way to spread the word locally to several runners and families who were touched by the Boston Marathon this past spring. Here is Ray’s write-up:

"Going the extra mile to support the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing - It's here! 'The 27th Mile' is a new anthology full of articles, stories and poems about running and runners that extol the spirit that first got us out on the roads to run, that brought us to Boston on a sunny spring day, and that will bring us back to Hopkinton next year.

"The book is $12.99 for the paperback and $4.99 for ebook. All proceeds from sales of 'The 27th Mile' will go to The One Fund Boston to support the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Go to http://www.the27thmile.com/.

"I'm asking you to help by doing two things:

1. Buy a copy of the book (maybe more than one - it makes a great gift!)

2. Tell your friends - share the link to the book's website with your running club and others who might be interested. Facebook, Twitter, blog posts, word-of-mouth ... it's all good!

"'The 27th Mile' includes a mix of fiction and nonfiction contributed by a wide range of talented writers who run. They're marathon champions and weekend warriors, ultramarathon racers and fitness joggers, running magazine pros and bloggers, best-selling novelists and indie publishing standouts, people like Amby Burfoot, Ben Tanzer, Kathrine Switzer and Lawrence Block (and me!).

"It's a great book for everyone who, even as they eat dinner with their family, put in another eight hours at work, or sit and read this book, have already planned when they'll go out for their next run. I guarantee that you will enjoy it!"
