SDCS announces Lee Mitchell Scholarship winners

June 28, 2013

The Southern Delaware Choral Society has selected Brenna Gause and Andrew Maglione as the winners of its Lee Mitchell Scholarship. Each year, the organization selects one or two deserving high school students to receive the scholarship. The program provides a $1,000 scholarship for voice lessons, membership in the SDCS Chorus and assistance with performance attire. The recipients will sing with the chorus throughout the 2013-14 concert season and are often provided opportunities to showcase their skills by performing solos during the concerts.

Brenna Gause, 16, from Harbeson, is entering her junior year at Sussex Technical High School, where she sings in the chorus. She has studied voice with Jerry Birl and Sarah Rose. Recently she has been in two Clear Space Theatre Company children’s theater productions, performing the role of Lucy in "Join the Circus" and the role of Cinderella in “Grimm Trail.” While she is not quite sure what path her future will take, she hopes to go to college, and her dream is to go to New York and pursue musical theater.

Andrew Maglione, 17, of Rehoboth Beach, is entering his junior year at Cape Henlopen High School, where he sings with the Cape Chorale. A multitalented musician, Andy plays guitar and piano, and has studied voice with Monte Long. This year he won the Cape Factor talent show with an original song. He wrote an anti-bullying song that was featured during the school’s anti-bullying campaign. Currently, he is employed by Chick-fil-A, and his future plans include college and pursuit of a career in the music industry.

The Southern Delaware Choral Society’s scholarship program was made possible by a generous donation in memory of local and world-famous composer and pianist Lee Mitchell and through generous annual donations from SDCS's many friends. Former Lee Mitchell Scholars have come from Cape Henlopen, Indian River, Milford, Sussex Central and Seaford high schools. Auditions are held in late spring for the next season's Lee Mitchell Scholars.
