VIA Chicken Plunge to take place Sept. 7

Proceeds from fundraiser to benefit RBP
July 17, 2013

The second annual Rehoboth Beach Chicken Plunge activities begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, off Grenoble Place at the end of the Boardwalk near the Henlopen Hotel and the Village Improvement Association clubhouse. The plunge will be at 1 p.m. There will also be a small pool for toe dipping on the Boardwalk for those who don’t care to walk to the ocean.

“There is much more to the Chicken Plunge than going into the ocean,“ said Stephanie Hobbs, VIA chair of the event. “There will be games, face painting, kites on the beach, a fire truck experience, food and prizes.”

“This event is for everyone, all ages,” said Hobbs. “We had Chicken Plunge participants who were up in their 90s last year. The water will be warmer than what residents have in February when the popular Special Olympics Plunge is held, and swimmers are urged to go fully into the ocean.”

It costs $10 for adults to register and $5 for children under 12 who register with a participating adult. Registration on the Boardwalk starts at 11 a.m. the day of the plunge. There are forms on the VIA website for registration, signing with a pledge and a safety waiver form.

Register online at Click on Events. Those registering this way must do it by Friday, Aug. 30. Pledges are welcome.

The VIA is a nonprofit, volunteer service organization in Rehoboth Beach. Funds this year from the Chicken Plunge will again go to the Rehoboth Beach Patrol, which bought a beach wheelchair with some of the funds raised last year. Additional funds were used to help fund the renovation of the VIA clubhouse.

The event will go on this year, rain or shine, unless there is severe weather such as a hurricane. Then, the event will be postponed to Sept. 21. For more information, call Elayne at 302-227-1958 or go to
