Cape Junior League All-Stars advance to finals

Wil Jarrell's hits and pitches lift team over Nanticoke
July 18, 2013

The Cape Junior League All-Stars only scored in one inning in their game against rival Nanticoke/Seaford, but that's all the team needed in the 4-1 victory.

With the win July 17 on the Nanticoke field, the Cape stars advance to the finals of the postseason tournament at 7 p.m., Friday, July 19, in Seaford. The unbeaten Cape stars are finding out that it's much easier to stay in the winners' bracket and not have daily games like the teams that fall into the losers' bracket.

Wil Jarrell, who pitched the last two innings recording five strikeouts, had the big bat, getting three hits with one RBI, including two long singles deep in the outfield. Other hits were few and far between for Cape as Nanticoke pitcher Dylan Kensinger threw more than 95 pitches going into the sixth inning. He allowed five hits and had nine strikeouts. Zack Gelof with a sixth-inning double and Ryan Meade with an RBI single in the third inning had the only other Cape hits.

In the all-important third inning, Cape took advantage of three walks, an error and timely hits from Meade and Jarrell - both with the bases loaded - to take a 4-1 lead. Nanticoke had jumped out on top early 1-0 in the first inning. A heads-up Cape double play ended a Nanticoke rally with the bases loaded and one out.

Although Cape's defense was a little rocky in spots, the team came up with big plays when it needed to. Centerfielder Kyle Lux made a shoestring, diving catch in the fourth inning to save a run, and another double play in the third cut short a Nanticoke rally.

In the sixth inning, Cape catcher Richard Carey threw out Nanticoke's Kensinger at third base, and then in the seventh, he made a perfect throw to second to catch a stealing Nanticoke runner.

Noah Clifton and Gelof also pitched for Cape.

The 3-0 Cape stars defeated Lower Sussex 3-1 and Georgetown 14-4 in the first two rounds of the tournament.
