MHDC partners with First Presbyterian churches in New York to help local homeowners
Approximately 43 young adults and 14 team leaders from First Presbyterian churches in Rome, Utica, Holland Patent and Augusta, N.Y. partnered with Milford Housing Development Corporation’s Home Repair Project during the week of July 8 to provide emergency home repair to four Delaware homeowners.
The groups replaced a roof in Georgetown and two in Millsboro. Also in Millsboro, they tore down a deteriorated pump house and built a new one to house the well pump and hot water heather. The crews also built a hand rail on the front steps, constructed steps at the side door and repaired flooring in the dining room, kitchen and bedroom. Two groups worked on two homes in Seaford. The first group reseated leaking windows, replaced a rear door and repaired floors in the kitchen, master bedroom and two bathrooms. The second group replaced a shower and toilet, repaired flooring in the master bath, master bedroom, hall bath, laundry area and living room. They also replaced a side entry door, which the client uses as a primary entrance.
In addition to providing emergency home repairs, the groups finished up the week by volunteering for MHDC’s Self-Help Housing Program. The group helped shingle a self-help home on Sharps Road in Milford. “For 22 years, the HRP and Utica teams have shared management and leadership to provide home repairs for those less fortunate. A true win-win of vision, mission and purpose,” said Fred Traute, MHDC preservation manager.
The Home Repair Project provides emergency-related, health and safety repairs to qualified Delaware homeowners. With the help of volunteers and grants obtained through local partnerships, all repairs are provided at no cost to qualified recipients. Since 1991, the Home Repair Project has helped thousands of families make their homes safer.
