Clear Space Theatre's 'Radio Gaga' rocks Rehoboth's summer stage

July 26, 2013

With the recent popularity of movies like "Pitch Perfect" and "Burlesque" and TV shows like "Glee," "Smash" and "Nashville," Clear Space Theatre has responded with its own take on the current musical scene with a high-energy mix of rock, rhythm and Broadway. "Radio Gaga: A Gleeful Music Event," a  summer repertory production, opened July 12 and runs through Sept. 7.

"After last summer’s success with taking pop/rock Broadway genres and creating a revue with 'Broadway at the Beach,' Michael Matthias and I brainstormed about what we could do to ride this wave to its next height, and we began by discussing current TV shows, movies and music in general. From that conversation, 'Radio Gaga' leapt into being as simply that - an idea," says the show's director David Button.

"In the last year, I have compiled songs that I thought would fit into this new revue, and as I chose them, I realized that this show was becoming more of a concert or giant music video - made for the stage with a musical theater take for a live audience," says Button.

Radio hits from artists like Adele, Pink, Katy Perry, Beyoncé, Kesha, Kelly Clarkson and Lady Gaga are given Broadway treatment. "Ultimately, it’s the visuals that inspired the idea for the industrial, high-gloss black look of the set that is a combination of urban and chic. Adding the lights to this show then moved this concept to the concert feel with the lights taking on a life of their own - almost like another character in the show. Once the costumes, hair and makeup were introduced the concept was fully realized as the artistic, high-fashion event that it was intended to be," says Button.

‘We are excited to have a contemporary show like 'Radio Gaga' to enhance our presentation of two classic Broadway musicals, 'La Cage Aux Folles,' and 'The Sound of Music.' 'Radio Gaga' is a performance that can be enjoyed by the whole family,” said Wesley Paulson, executive director of Clear Space Theatre.
