HLFM moves summer’s farm to table feast to Shields School Aug. 3

August 1, 2013

The best of Delmarva’s fresh local farm products awaits!  The Historic Lewes Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Aug. 3.  This Saturday the market will be held in the parking lot of Shields Elementary School at the intersection of Savannah Road and Sussex Drive.  The HLFM is the largest producer-only market in Delaware.

The market continues the Annual Bike Raffle tradition.  This year, the bike is a 2013 Electra Coaster 3i three-speed cruiser. It is a bright green flash color, and has whitewall tires and a cushy white seat. The big bell sounds like a doorbell, and, of course, the bike comes with an easy-release basket that can be taken to market. The winning ticket will be drawn Saturday, Aug. 31. Market patrons can enter every Saturday they come to market.

There will be no Children’s Reading Hour or demonstration as the market is being held at Shields School.

The market is processing SNAP (EBT Food Stamps). To help lower economic barriers to local healthy food, the HLFM will match up to $10 in SNAP with HLFM Bonus Bucks.  SNAP participants are encouraged to go to the SNAP Information Tent at the market to redeem their Bonus Bucks.

What better way to celebrate summer than a picnic at the beach or on the patio featuring the region’s best summer produce?  The challenge is which of the newly harvested garden, bakery and farm products to select. For breakfast there are farm-fresh eggs, lean bacon or scrapple paired with nutritious yogurt and right-from-the-oven baked bread and muffins.  At lunchtime, there's salad with a slew of fresh vegetables. Then, for a memorable dinner, choose from steaks or pork on the grill with fresh corn on the cob, a tomato salad with basil and cheese, and a luscious fruit pie.  The market’s wide variety of vendors offer produce, meat, chicken, lamb, dairy products and many other agricultural offerings.  Specific types and varieties of fresh meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants are listed by vendor in the HLFM newsletter sent to patrons on the first Thursday of the month during the market season. Newsletters for the remainder of the month will highlight featured vendors and selected produce.  The newsletter is also posted on the market's Facebook page. This year, American Farmland Trust has a new celebration of farms. It is called I Love My Farmers Market - a celebration to raise national awareness about local farmers markets and put money directly in the pockets of family farmers. This celebration replaces the America's Favorite Farmers Market contest. The top three most celebrated markets from each state will receive special recognition.  Help the HLFM be No. 1 in Delaware!  Throughout the celebration, market patrons may pledge dollars they intend to spend at their local farmers markets. Pledges can be cast once a day. A pledge equals a commitment to put $10 in the pockets of family farmers. Market organizers hope market patrons will pledge to spend $10 per week at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market. Go to www.lovemyfarmersmarket.org.
