VIA plans family-friendly Chicken Plunge Sept. 7

Plans are proceeding for the second annual Village Improvement Association Chicken Plunge being held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Boardwalk and Grenoble Place, next to the Henlopen Hotel in Rehoboth Beach. This event is for all ages. It is modeled on the Polar Bear Plunge, which takes place in February in freezing weather. Those who are too chicken to do that can plunge in September when the water is warmer.

The event will take place at the north end of the Boardwalk, near the Henlopen Hotel and the VIA Clubhouse.

“Our activities include games, face painting, kites on the beach and a fire truck experience” said Carolyn Billingsley, VIA president. “There will also be prizes for the games. And there will be food, including hot dogs and chili dogs, chicken wings, beverages and cookies, among other things."

Capt. Kent Buckson of the Rehoboth Beach Patrol said, “My staff really enjoyed this activity last year, and we look forward to this year’s event. It was the first time that we had worked with the VIA and we were honored to be a part of something they sponsor. The VIA has a long history, over 100 years, and a rich tradition of giving back to the community.”

Those attending the Chicken Plunge are encouraged to pledge a financial gift to the VIA to go toward the VIA capital campaign and the renovation of the clubhouse as well as a gift to the Rehoboth Beach Patrol. “Ask members of your family or friends to pledge in your name,” said Billingsley. “You can do this online at; click on events."

The event costs adults $10 to register, and it’s $5 for children 12 and under who register with a participating adult. Registration on the Boardwalk starts at 11 a.m. the day of the plunge.Those registering online must do so by Friday, Aug. 30.
