August 13, 2013

The Second Annual Vera “Polly” Horsey-Hitchens Basketball Tournament was held June 8 at Paul Laurence Dunbar Elementary School in Laurel.

The tournament was held in memory of Polly Horsey-Hitchens, who died of breast cancer in June 2003 at the age of 45. Her son, Trevor Horsey, his wife Sabrina and Polly’s other children - Kenyon Horsey, Auntrell Horsey and Donna Hitchens - organized this basketball tournament to honor their mother, promote awareness and raise funds to help fight breast cancer in their community.

The family day included games and homemade food.  Community members such as Nanticoke Surgical Associates, Nanticoke Gastroenterology, Tracy Tapman, Nanticoke Medical Staff, PL Bennington LLC, Harley L. Lord of Rhyne Plumbing Inc, Teamster Local Union No. 355, Sussex Electric, Andy Wile and Barbara Wright were all sponsors of the tournament. With their help, Trevor Horsey was able to raise more than $1,650 for the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.
