Krausz exhibit 'Beyond Words' opens Aug. 9 at Gallery 50 in Rehoboth

Gallery 50 Contemporary Art & Frame Shop in Rehoboth Beach welcomes a new exhibit: "Beyond Words" by Michael Krausz. The show will run from Friday, Aug. 9, through Tuesday, Sept. 3. “Michael Krausz is well-known in the local arts community,” said Gallery 50 manager Ed McGann.

Krausz’s paintings depict various spatial planes at once, embodying ciphers of no literal significance. They are concerned with the emergence and dissolution of symbols in infinite spaces. He does this by smearing powdered pigments with dry brush onto museum board, leaving traces of his ciphers in motion. His paintings embody a kind of automatic writing arising from his conductorial gestures. Krausz explains, "My work seeks to integrate my philosophical and musical concerns."

Krausz is a professor of philosophy at Bryn Mawr College, and he teaches aesthetics at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He is also the founding artistic director and conductor of the Great Hall Chamber Orchestra. Krausz has had 34 solo and duo exhibitions in the U.S., U.K. and India, and has participated in many group exhibitions. He studied at the Philadelphia College of Art and was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 1973. He is a member of The Artist’s Exchange, Delaware. In 2009, Delaware by Hand designated Krausz as a Master member.

Krausz’s works have been extensively reviewed. According to Edward Sozanski, art critic of the Philadelphia Enquirer: “Michael Krausz converts imaginative impulse expressed through magnificent technique into syncretic art of mysterious presence…The slight, unidirectional smearing of the characters emphasizes the artist’s concentration on achieving complete integration of mind and hand.”

The opening reception for the exhibit is Saturday, Aug. 10, 6 to 8 p.m., and everyone is welcome to attend.

The opening coincides with the MOSAIC Second Saturday Art Walk and Gallery 50's 5th Annual Fine Art Auction to benefit AIDS Delaware - all Saturday evening.

Gallery 50 Contemporary Art & Framing is at 50 Wilmington Ave. in Rehoboth Beach, next door to Henlopen City Oyster House. The gallery is open every day except Wednesdays, which are by chance or appointment. Contact McGann at 302-227-2050, go to www.50contemporaryart.com, or email ed@50contemporaryart.com.
