Local club competitions keep the summer busy

The lady golfers at Rehoboth Beach Country Club and Kings Creek Country Club continue to make this a busy summer for competitive events on their home golf courses.

The 18 Hole Ladies Day at Rehoboth on July 17 featured the familiar two best balls of four net format.

Connie Kotula, Carole Ann Medd, Bev Sanderson and Judy Bennett won first place net, followed by Barb Collins, Elise Coar, Gayle Truitt and Sharon Crist in second.

In the blind draw net segment, Truitt, Jeanine Lindsey, Beth Forbes and Ann Cunningham took first-place honors.

Medd finished first gross single with an 86, and Collins was low net single for the day with her 67.

The Rehoboth Ladies 18 Hole group stuck to the same format for their July 24 event.

This time, Robbie Robinson, Bailey Scheurer, Cyndy Simeone and Elaine Taylor won first-place net. They were one shot better with their tie-breaking back nine score against the second-place team of Forbes, Kathy Carroll, Diane Strickler and Barb Morgan.

In the blind net draw rearrangement, Forbes, Simeone, Arlene Simms and Pat Beebe came in first.

Robbie Robinson fired a 79 for low gross single honors for the day, and Pris Desena’s 66 was the best low net single score. Desena also had the low putt total (31).

On July 31, the RBCC Ladies 18 Hole group held their Senior Club Championship.

Suzanne Moore repeated her 2012 triumph, winning the tournament with her 84. Beth Carpenter finished second gross, only two strokes back.

In Division 1, a net category, Forbes’ 73 put her two strokes ahead of second-place finisher Peggy Roca. Collins’ 75 took third in a score card playoff.

For that division’s closest to the pin contests, Roca won on the third hole, Suzanne Moore won the fifth hole, and Sharon Crist won the 15th hole.

In Division 2 (net), Gayle Truitt finished first, followed by Karen Storms in second and Pris DeSena in third. Tina Brinsfield took fourth spot in another scorecard playoff.

Brinsfield won the division’s closest to the pin contest on the third hole, and Ella Alexander won the fifth hole, while Pauline Porter had the best shot on the 15th hole.

In Division 3, Judy Bennett’s net 70 was good for first place. Medd took second with her 74. Carole Perry finished one stroke back in third place, and Jeannie Lindsay took fourth.

For Division 3's closest to the hole contests, Bennett won on the third hole. Joan Crowley was best on the fifth hole and Medd was closest on the 15th hole.

Brinsfield also won the Karen Blancke Memorial Award with her tee shot on the scenic bayside 19th hole.

On Aug. 1, the Kings Creek Country Club Ladies 18 Hole Golf League played a T and F format event. In most cases, that means the only scores that count are taken from the holes whose numbers start with a T or an F.

I’ve seen that format used before. I have always wondered why anyone needed to play the other holes under those conditions, such as the second, sixth or eighth. It could be a great way to speed up a round.

Diane Sweeney took first place in the first flight, followed by Dorrie Spilman in second and Jan Howard in third. In the second flight, Atom Irwin finished first, with Joanne Yurik taking second and Prabhat Karapurkar coming in third.

Patti Magee won the closest to the pin contest on the 13th hole with a shot ending only 9-feet-4-inches from going in.

The Kings Creek 9 Hole Ladies group came together Aug. 5 for their usual competition. Monica Fleischmann won first place, Kathy Nave won second and Chris Sullivan came in third.

Fleischmann also won the closest to the pin contest for the day.
