Free to Breathe 5K comes to Lewes Aug. 11
The Free to Breathe event series held throughout the country unites people who are passionate about creating public awareness of lung cancer and raising vital funding for research.
You can be one of the many who join thousands of lung cancer survivors, family, friends and advocates to create change for lung cancer. You can positively impact the lives of those affected by this disease.
Join the Seashore Striders and the Free to Breathe team this Sunday, Aug. 11, at Cape Henlopen High School for an 8:30 a.m. 5K start with registration to begin at 6:30 a.m.
Reporter and weekend anchor Jemie Lee and "Good Morning Delmarva" meteorologist Travis Michels from WMDT 47 News will be emceeing the festivities. There will be plenty of family fun, with refreshments as well as music and entertainment provided by Greene Entertainment and acoustic musician Bryen O'Boyle from Mr. Greengenes. Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Irish Eyes Pub & Restaurant, and Pineapple Princess Resort Wear have also provided door prizes for this year. See you at the start!
Dam Mill 5K & Hall of Fame
David McCollam ran away from the field to capture the 30th Dam Mill 5K Run in Millsboro as the runner from Bridgeport, W.Va., clicked off a 5:01 mile pace to cross the line in 15:34. Local Enos Benbow was a distant second in 16:51, while 17-year-old Adam Houston of Seattle, Wash., rounded out the top three finishers in 17:46 to win the 14-19 age group. Mike Sewell of Camden won the masters in 18:14.
On the female side of the action, 24-year-old Lillian McCormiek of Rehoboth Beach won the title in 19:15, followed by Cindy Conant of Kensington, Md., in 19:29. Rounding out the top three was Bethany Killmon, 17, of Bridgeville in 20:30; she was the winner of the 14-19 age group. Meryl Ludwig won the female masters in a time of 20:53, one of the best of the summer.
The highlight of the morning was the induction of two local running icons as Richard Tikiob and Dave “Fredman” Frederick were inducted into the Hall of Fame. Tikiob, who once was second at the Lewes Seashore Marathon, has competed in nearly every Dam Mill event and for the last 10 years has been capturing memories along the course with his traveling camera. Frederick competed in the event in the early '80s, racing in the 23-minute range, and has covered the event for the Whale and now Cape Gazette newspapers for the past 25 years. Local Joe LoBiondo, who holds a PR of 18:05 at the 1987 Dam Mill, was the honored starter for the event. The restaurant icon in Millsboro, The Georgia House, has agreed to display the Hall of Fame plaque until the 2014 event. A load of tradition and memories at the 30th Dam Mill, and a good time was had by all.
Hundley races Leadville
This Saturday, Aug. 10, marks the 20th anniversary of the first Leadville Trail 100 mountain bike race, and this year, more than 2,200 racers will descend on the town of Leadville in Colorado to race the epic event.
Among those 2,200 riders, three men will be attempting to finish the race for a 20th time, and among the crowd will be Rick Hundley of Bethany Beach. Hundley has completed two events. In 2011, his son Blake ran alongside his bike to cross the finish line in a time of 10:40:00, while in 2012 he completed the course in 11:30:00.
For some athletes, it's about results; for others it's about finishing. “The race throws everything at you; you have to be ready,” said Hundley. “At one point you may be walking your bike up a mountain at 12,000 feet altitude and another point you are tearing down a mountain going 50 mph. You must finish in 12 hours to get the belt buckle, and the race has over 14,000 feet of climbing in 100 miles.”
Whatever the motivation, the 100-mile race will exhaust the mind and body as riders try to earn the coveted LT100 belt buckle. “I’m feeling strong and ready,” said Hundley. Read about the race or track an athlete by visiting leadvilleraceseries.com. Good luck, Rick!
