Frederick J. Willoughby, Port Lewes homeowner

Fred Willoughby of Kennet Square, Pa. passed away peacefully at Brandywine/Longwood Assisted Living Tuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, due to complications associated with Alzheimer's Disease.

Fred was born in 1927 in Oceanside, Long Island, N.Y. When he was a teenager, he and his family moved to Wilmington where he attended P.S. DuPont High School. After high school he joined the Navy and achieved the rank of Seaman Second Class. Following his tour of duty, he attended the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of Business. A

fter graduation, he began his life-long career in the Dupont Company's textile-fiber division. He worked in several locations, including six years in their office in Geneva, Switzerland. Fred was awarded the merchandising award for developing new markets for carpet fibers.

Fred and his beloved wife Janet built and restored several houses in the Wilmington area. In addition, he was the president of the Port Lewes Home Owners' Association for several years. Fred was a world traveler who especially loved taking long cruises.

In addition to his best buddy Janet, wife of 63 years, he leaves behind a daughter, Dawn Willoughby (Drew Knox); a son, Jon Willoughby; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and two sisters, Constance H. Benoliel and Gigi Willoughby.

The family would like to thank Brandywine/Longwood Assisted Living and Willow Tree Hospice for the loving care given to Fred during his final months.
