Dewey Movies & Bonfires on the Beach celebrate another successful summer

August 27, 2013

The Annual Movies & Bonfires on the Beach in Dewey end for the summer on Aug. 27 and 29 respectively. The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce, Town of Dewey Beach and Discover Bank announced the program, which began in 2008, was another stunning success in 2013 for visitors and locals alike.

The movie and bonfire program was the brainchild of the chamber’s Dewey Beach Task Force. While at a task force meeting, the chamber suggested ideas to encourage rentals and overnight stays on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights. The chamber agreed to organize, staff and produce these activities. The Town of Dewey Beach agreed to offer free parking in nonmetered areas after 5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and include bonfire setup as a part of Dave Lynam’s Dewey Beach Service concession contract. The result was an annual summer event series which is run June through August.

Since its inception, the program, staffed by chamber interns, has grown from drawing crowds of 200 to 300 to garnering audiences of 500 people per evening. The program has evolved through the years and now includes a giveaway for spectators each evening, a movie night preview show and corporate sponsor, Discover Bank.

The Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce thanks the Town of Dewey Beach, Discover Bank, Dewey Beach Service, Home Media One, Swank Motion Pictures and the business community for their continued support.
