September 4, 2013

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of men and women.  In the United States, one out of every four women dies of heart disease, according to the National Institutes of Health.

To raise awareness about heart disease in women, the American Heart Association in 2004 kicked off the Go Red for Women social and educational initiative, which includes an annual fundraising luncheon bringing women together to learn more about the disease so that they can empower themselves.

Beebe Medical Center will sponsor the 7th Annual Go Red for Women Luncheon and Fashion Show Wednesday, Sept. 18, at the Clubhouse at Baywood Greens in Long Neck. Doors will open at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon. The cost is $30 a person.

Keynote speaker will be electrophysiologist Firas El-Sabbagh, MD., a cardiologist specialized in treating patients for arrhythmias and other electrical disorders of the heart.

El-Sabbagh joined the Beebe Medical Center staff in 2012 from University Hospitals Case Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, where he gained specialized training and experience in treating electrical disorders of the heart. El-Sabbagh, who has a private office in Lewes and Millsboro, is Board Certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease and cardiac electrophysiology. He also is a Fellow of the Heart Rhythm Society.  He sees patients at his office and he also performs specialized procedures at Beebe Medical Center.

As an extra addition to the luncheon event, community health nurses from the Beebe Medical Center’s Population Health Department will be providing blood pressure screenings for those attending the luncheon from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m.

Co-chairs of the event are Pat Sandy of the Beebe Medical Center Auxiliary and Donna Streletzky, vice president of operations at Beebe Medical Center. For tickets, contact either Sandy at 302-226-7732, or Muriel Pfeiffer at 947-2640.

Choices for the lunch entrée are: chef salad, chef’s quiche with side house salad, and a vegetable panini with portabella mushroom and a pasta salad. Checks, for $30 per person, are to be made to the American Heart Association/So DE. They should be sent to: Muriel Pfeiffer, 13 Apache Ave., Millsboro, DE 19966.
