Thoughts From the Sidelines

September brings harvest of sports

September 5, 2013

The Phillies are continuing their very inconsistent season with the antics of the bullpen this past week. They had a good chance to win two out of three from the Chicago Cubs this past weekend but blew that opportunity by losing the second game 4-3 after having the lead in the middle of the game. The relief pitchers are worthless if they can't hold a lead. Hopefully, next year's budget will be used wisely if you know what I mean. To leave me with any feelings of credibility at all, they had to leave the series against the Washington Nationals with at least two wins. This would at least have knocked Washington out of the playoff race.

College football started this past week. No one game is very important as of yet but I did enjoy watching the Syracuse versus Penn State game because of family allegiances. Until scores of games matter, I thought I would take this week to have my say about the Johnny Manzel situation. The NCAA's decision to suspend Manzel for half a game just shows that this whole mess was not the huge deal everybody made it out to be. It's a well known rule that there is to be no money gained from signing autographs while a college athlete. This whole "investigation" was just as sketchy as the people who exposed it. Manzel knows that he is a good candidate for the NFL draft next year and will ultimately make plenty of money if he continues to play as he does now. I certainly hope that he is the upstanding person he claims to be and that there is no pot of cash buried somewhere. This mess could have cost the entire team a forfeited season! Hopefully this fiasco is behind us and reporting on the actual games will now matter.

In golf this week it was the last chance to qualify for the President's Cup. This is the end-of-the-year competition between the U.S. and the rest of the golf world. It's a great "world" event to watch even with the fact that the U.S. has won seven out of nine times since 1994. I guess it's due time for another country to take the win but I am still rooting for the U.S. There are still three events left for the Fed Ex Cup to close the official golf season and hopefully a long Indian Summer in Sussex County for us locals to be able to play at least another month or two.
