September 10, 2013

The Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Rehoboth Beach will begin fall English as a second language classes Tuesday, Sept. 24. Classes will be offered from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students can attend either the morning or evening or both. All levels from beginners to very advanced are offered.

This year, a literacy class has been added for students who did not learn to read and write in their own language. In addition, there is a GED class, and civic lessons are taught each week to all levels.

Registration will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 17, and Thursday, Sept. 19. The cost is $20 to cover materials. There is free child care at all the classes.

This year, LCOS ESL is offering a new Family Literacy Program from 9 to 11 on Wednesday mornings beginning Sept. 25. This program is open to 3- and 4-year-olds and will help parents prepare their children for kindergarten. Basic skills as well as English will be taught. One parent must attend with the child. This program is free but enrollment is limited. Registration for the FLIP Program will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18.

LCOS began ESL classes in 2003 and the program has grown each year. More than 40 volunteers from many different professions and backgrounds serve as teachers. While it is helpful to know some Spanish for the beginning levels, most teachers do not speak Spanish. There will be a training session for teachers at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Those interested in helping in this program can call Sam Flores at 302-645-8845 or contact the church office at 302-227-3066.

Funding for the program is provided by the church, individual and business donations, and a grant from the Arsht Cannon Fund. The church is at 20276 Bay Vista Road, Rehoboth Beach, behind the Big Fish Grill.
