Mary Irene Prenger, devout Catholic

Mary Irene Prenger, 93, of Lewes, passed away Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, at her residence.

She was born in New Castle, Pa., June 23, 1920, daughter of the late Sylvester and Catherine (Dwyer) Donegan. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by her husband, James "Jim" Prenger in 2002; her two sisters; and her two great-grandchildren, Tommy and Ashley Goffaux.

Mrs. Prenger grew up in Baltimore, Md., and in 1963 moved to Charleston, W.Va., where she was active in Sacred Heart Parish and the community. In 1980 she and her husband retired to Rehoboth Beach where they had vacationed their entire lives. They joined St. Edmond Catholic Church where she continued her many parish and community activities such as Casa San Francisco. She was a member of the Sussex YMCA where she enjoyed twice a week water aerobics up until she was 90 years old. Her family and friends meant everything to her and her door was always open to everyone she met.

She is survived by her three daughters: Patricia Goffaux of Greenbelt, Md., Maureen Dalton and her husband Mark of Londonderry, N.H. and Kathleen Hartmann and her husband Glenn of Bainbridge Island, Wash.; her six grandchildren: James Goffaux and his wife Kathleen, Sarah Quinn and her husband Timothy, Joseph Dalton and his wife Melissa, Timothy Dalton, Emma Hartmann, and Abby Hartmann; and her three great-grandchildren, Connor, Annie and Emmitt.

Mass of Christian Burial was offered Thursday, Sept. 5, at St. Edmond Catholic Church, Rehoboth Beach.

Burial was Friday Sept. 6, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.
